Jay DeMerit was a good athlete in both high school and college, but was not drafted by any MLS teams in the US.
Not one to give up, legend has it that DeMerit took the last $1800 from his bank account and made his way to England to chase his dreams. He began playing for Southall, a team that was eight leagues below the English Premier League, but ended up getting a contract at Watford. He helped Watford get promoted to the Premier League, and played there until 2010. He now plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps and is a member of the US national team.
