Despite losing four games in a row, Liverpool managed to find their feet against a high-flying Manchester United in their Barclays Premier League match last Sunday.
For the first half of the match Liverpool maintained the majority of possession and seemed to be the better side on the day, but United wouldn’t go easy, launching counter-attacks at every opportunity.
The second half saw United’s attempts to claw their way back into the match thwarted by Liverpool’s defence. Liverpool however, were able to put together a string of play that blinded United defenders as Yossi Benayoun fed Fernando with a sublime through-ball, which he had then converted into the goal.
United’s Nemanja Vidic once again found himself sent-off against the Reds, making it his third match in a row. Shown a yellow card earlier in the match, Liverpool’s Javier Mascherano was also shown the red for an offence against United’s Van der Sar.
Typically, in the dying minutes of the match United looked to be on the prowl for some goals as they always do, but this time, it would be Liverpool’s David Ngog who had exploited United’s hurried counter-attacks and scored in the sixth minute of extra time.
Under pressure Rafa Benitez can finally find some relief from the critics who believe his term at Liverpool should end.
