Anticipated as what would be the foundation for one of the best races of the season, the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi most certainly delivered on all fronts. Not only did it provide for some of the best racing on-circuit, the new track in Abu Dhabi was certainly a feast for the eyes and senses. Everything from the fancy pit-lane exit to the mesmerizing array of lights atop the circuit was simply astounding in every sense of the word.
But what’s a track without any cars to drive on it? And boy was Lewis quick throughout the weekend. Hammering out blindingly quick laps from his McLaren in qualifying and then having to retire early in the race on Sunday due to a brake failure of some sort must have been excruciating.
And there to pick up the pieces was the ever-reliant Sebastian Vettel, in his Red Bull. Winning by simply being there to win it has been the way for Vettel yet again. I mean seriously, sitting around and waiting for the lead runners to fall off one by one has to be a little shy of the stuff of champions.
Mark Webber was also there to follow suit and pick up a second place finish behind his German comrade, ahead of World Champion Jenson Button. And about that, hasn’t it been a while now since we’ve seen dear Jenson on a podium? Good for him, at least he’s got a chance to get up there and celebrate like a real champion is supposed to.
The saddest of these tragedies has to be that the Formula One calendar has run out of dates! There aren’t any tracks left to race on for this year and forecasts predict a cold four months until we see some racing again. And that’s if Formula One can still hold on to some of the magic that makes Formula One despite the countless attempts by environmentalist to turn it into a marathon of bore.
So will it excite? Or are we to expect a monotonous carousel of doom? Well here’s what we think…
